In an audacious move, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has tabled articles of impeachment targeting Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. This bold maneuver, announced Wednesday, emerges from mounting allegations of ethical misconduct against the conservative justices.
Despite the fervor, the initiative faces a steep uphill battle in the Republican-dominated House of Representatives. Impeachment demands a majority vote in the House followed by a two-thirds conviction vote in the Senate, making the path forward exceedingly narrow.
The Democratic party has long criticized the Supreme Court’s right-leaning majority, particularly over decisions that have curtailed abortion rights, bolstered gun ownership, dismantled affirmative action in college admissions, and granted expansive immunity to former presidents, notably benefiting Donald Trump.
Ocasio-Cortez’s statement accuses Thomas and Alito of failing to recuse themselves from cases where they have significant financial and personal interests, posing a severe risk to the integrity of American jurisprudence.
The controversy surrounding Thomas includes allegations of non-disclosure of travel and accommodations funded by a wealthy donor, alongside his wife’s involvement in efforts to overturn Trump’s 2020 election defeat. Thomas contends that these were personal hospitality gestures not requiring disclosure.
Alito, on the other hand, has faced backlash over flags linked to Trump’s attempts to reverse the 2020 election results displayed outside his residences. Alito asserts that his wife, not he, was responsible for the flags.
