TikTok Agrees to Pay Alabama at Least $100 Million

TikTok has settled Alabama’s lawsuit over alleged harm to young users days before the first state trial of its kind was due to begin.

The agreement requires TikTok and its parent, ByteDance, to pay Alabama at least $100 million within 45 days. The amount may rise to $300 million if specified conditions are met. The settlement also requires new safeguards for younger users, including age-verification measures, limits on use and other child-safety controls.

Alabama had accused the companies of designing features that encouraged compulsive use by children while giving parents and consumers a misleading account of the platform’s safety. The settlement resolves those claims without a trial and does not convert the state’s allegations into judicial findings.

The case had been scheduled to open on Monday and was being watched because other states are pursuing similar claims against social-media platforms. Alabama’s agreement is TikTok’s first settlement with a state in that broader litigation.

The financial range leaves part of the ultimate payment dependent on the agreement’s conditions. The immediate legal consequence is clearer: Alabama’s trial is off, while the company’s obligations will now be measured against the settlement rather than a jury verdict.
