Egypt’s banking sector strengthened its external position in August, with net foreign assets climbing to $31.2 billion, the highest level recorded since January 2020, according to data from the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).
Commercial banks accounted for $12.4 billion of the total net foreign assets during the month. The CBE itself held a further $18.8 billion, highlighting a broad improvement across the banking system.
The latest figures mark a significant shift from the position seen a year earlier. By the end of July 2026, the banking sector’s net foreign assets had risen to EGP 1.454 trillion, compared with EGP 900.545 billion at the same point a year before.
The increase in net foreign assets provides a key measure of the banking system’s foreign-currency position and comes as Egypt continues to rebuild its external buffers and strengthen liquidity across the financial sector.
The August reading puts the country’s banking system at its strongest net foreign asset level in more than six years.
