Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has granted interim relief to Grameen Kalyan in its dispute over a tax demand of Tk666 crore, leaving the underlying liability unresolved.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque, sitting as judge-in-chamber, made the orders on October 18. The court’s published results record stays in two civil petitions brought by the organisation against the National Board of Revenue and other respondents.
Both matters are fixed for December 13. Grameen Kalyan’s lawyers say the relief pauses the requirement to pay the disputed tax for the time being; it is not a final decision cancelling the assessment.
The dispute concerns demands for five assessment years, from 2012–13 to 2016–17. The High Court rejected the organisation’s challenges on September 10, with its full reasons released on October 15.
Sunday’s development is the subsequent interim stay, not a reversal on the merits of those reasons. The two petitions, numbered 3942 and 3943 of 2026, remain before the appellate court.
