Appeals arising from three prominent murder cases in Bangladesh now have hearing dates in November and December, after scheduling orders by the Supreme Court’s judge-in-chamber.
The Narayanganj seven-murder appeal is fixed for November 17. The appeal over the killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad follows on November 24, and the Major Sinha Mohammed Rashed Khan case on December 1.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque made the orders on October 18. All three dates appear in the court’s supplementary cause list with recorded results.
These are hearing arrangements, not decisions affirming or overturning the convictions. The merits of the appeals remain to be considered.
The High Court previously upheld 15 death sentences in the Narayanganj case. In the Abrar case, it upheld death sentences for 20 people and life imprisonment for five. In the Sinha case, the earlier decision upheld sentences including those against former police officers Pradip Kumar Das and Liakat Ali.
Fixing a date does not establish when the appellate court will deliver its final decision.
