ASIC Accepts Auditor Registration Cancellations After Quality Review

ASIC accepted the cancellation of an auditor’s registration and an authorised audit company’s registration following surveillance concerns.

Australia’s corporate regulator has accepted the cancellation of two audit registrations after a surveillance review identified significant concerns about audit quality.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said on October 23 that Benjamin Alfred Peters’ registration as a company auditor had been cancelled at his request. ASIC also accepted the cancellation of L Audit Pty Ltd’s registration as an authorised audit company.

The regulator linked the requests to surveillance work that examined the quality of audits associated with the registrations. Its notice did not impose a disciplinary finding or civil penalty. A voluntary cancellation removes the authority to perform functions that require the relevant registration, but it is distinct from a contested order following a misconduct hearing.

ASIC’s brief announcement did not identify particular issuer audits or set out the individual deficiencies found during surveillance. That limits the conclusions that can fairly be drawn from the action. The regulator’s stated position is that the review produced significant quality concerns and that both registrations have now been cancelled.

The case illustrates the supervisory route available alongside litigation and formal disciplinary proceedings. Registration is the legal gateway to company-audit work; surrendering it can address prospective risk without resolving every issue through an adjudicated case. Any future return to regulated audit practice would require the applicable registration process.
