British audit firms preparing to strip unnecessary standard language from their reports have received guidance on adopting revised reporting requirements early.
The Financial Reporting Council published a staff guidance note on October 13 for firms choosing to use revised ISA (UK) 700 before it takes effect on December 15. It also published an interim statement of auditors’ responsibilities.
The underlying standard was revised in June, alongside ISA (UK) 701 and ISA (UK) 720. The changes aim to shorten and clarify audit reports while increasing the information useful to people reading financial statements.
Today’s guidance responds to questions from firms interested in moving ahead of the formal implementation date. It does not announce another revision of the standards or bring their general effective date forward.
For readers, the distinction matters: a less repetitive report can still carry the same audit opinion and responsibilities. The regulator’s stated objective is clearer reporting, rather than a reduction in what the auditor must examine.
