District Legal Services Authority Srinagar Raises Awareness on Domestic Violence and Dowry Prohibition Acts

In a commendable effort to combat social evils and foster change within the community, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Srinagar, in collaboration with the Govt. Hr. Sec. School (GHSS) Khanyar Srinagar, organized a comprehensive awareness programme. This initiative, carried out under the guidance of Chairman DLSA, Jawad Ahmed, aimed to educate and empower individuals while shedding light on the importance of gender equality, the prevention of domestic violence, and the eradication of dowry practices.

The event, held at the Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School in Khanyar, witnessed the coming together of legal experts, educators, and students to address the pressing issues of domestic violence and dowry-related offenses. DLSA Srinagar’s resource persons, Tasneem Kauser (Deputy Legal Aid Défense Counsel) and Gazala Shamas Parray (Penal Lawyer), took center stage to emphasize the significance of collective responsibility in eliminating these societal ills.

During the awareness programme, the speakers highlighted the key provisions of the Domestic Violence Act and Dowry Prohibition Act, emphasizing the legal remedies available to victims and the repercussions for perpetrators. Students, faculty members from Govt. Higher Secondary School in Khanyar, Srinagar, and Para Legal Volunteers of DLSA, Srinagar were in attendance, demonstrating the broad support for this important cause.

The event comprised engaging discussions and interactive sessions, meticulously designed to educate attendees about the legal, social, and emotional aspects associated with domestic violence and dowry practices. With invaluable insights and guidance from the resource persons, participants gained a deeper understanding of how to recognize, report, and address instances of domestic violence and dowry demands.

In her vote of thanks, Sunila Kumari (JLA) of DLSA Srinagar expressed her gratitude to Govt. Hr. Sec. School Khanyar, Srinagar, for their invaluable partnership and unwavering dedication towards this noble cause. The Secretary of DLSA Srinagar, who oversaw the successful execution of the programme, stated, “By joining forces, we can create a society where every individual, irrespective of their gender, feels safe and respected. It is our collective responsibility to break the shackles of domestic violence and dowry practices, fostering an environment of equality and justice.”
