Dubai’s Pioneering Move: Imposing Fines for Single-Use Plastic Violations

Dubai, known for its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, has emerged as a trailblazer in the UAE by instituting a ban on single-use plastic as of January 1, 2024. Offenders risk facing fines of up to a substantial Dh2,000.

This progressive measure aligns with the federal government’s decisive stance, announced in January 2023, imposing a nationwide ban on single-use plastic slated for implementation in 2024. The collective goal is to safeguard the environment from the perils of pollution, curbing plastic consumption and establishing federal regulations on its usage.

In a bid to incentivize eco-friendly practices, the government has introduced a tariff of 25 fils or Dh0.25 for consumers employing single-use plastic bags. Many retailers across the country have already incorporated this tariff, penalizing shoppers who opt for plastic alternatives. Dubai embraced this tariff on July 1, with Sharjah following suit on October 1, 2022. Umm Al Quwain and Ajman initiated their single-use plastic bans on January 1, 2023, with Ras Al Khaimah joining the movement from the beginning of this year.

Abu Dhabi, taking a proactive stance, implemented a comprehensive prohibition on single-use plastic on June 1, 2022, while simultaneously banning Styrofoam products as of January 1, 2024. According to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, this dual ban resulted in saving an impressive 450,000 single-use plastic bags daily during the inaugural year of its enforcement. Dubai’s commitment to environmental sustainability continues to set an exemplary standard for the region.
