Duterte Impeachment Trial Narrows to Unexplained Wealth Charge

House prosecutors abandon three articles against Sara Duterte, leaving the Senate trial centred on alleged undisclosed wealth.

The impeachment case against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte narrowed sharply on October 13 as prosecutors abandoned three articles and chose to pursue her removal on the remaining allegation of unexplained wealth.

The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, allowed the withdrawal. Lead House prosecutor Gerville Luistro said the prosecution would no longer pursue Article I on confidential funds, Article III on bribery or Article IV on grave threats. Article II, concerning alleged unexplained wealth and asset disclosures, remains before the tribunal.

Luistro told the court that prosecutors considered their evidence on that article sufficient on its own. That is the prosecution’s assessment, not a finding that Duterte accumulated unlawful wealth. No conviction or removal order has been entered through this procedural step.

The change also produced a dispute over how Duterte could answer allegations that had already been aired. Lead defence counsel Sheila Sison argued that withdrawing accusations should not allow prosecutors to suppress the respondent’s rebuttal. The defence’s objection concerns its opportunity to present evidence, rather than an admission of the surviving charge.

The court directed prosecutors to submit their written offer of documentary and object evidence supporting Article II by October 23. The surviving case still requires the senator-judges to assess the evidence; abandoning the other articles does not resolve it.

The prosecution’s announcement recasts the scope of the trial around one alleged financial wrong. Readers should distinguish that narrowing from either an acquittal on the merits of every withdrawn allegation or a finding against Duterte on the charge that remains.
