FBI-Linked Immigration Probe Targets Ilhan Omar’s Home Weeks Before US Midterms

US immigration investigators carried out a predawn search at the Washington, DC, residence of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, escalating tensions between the Minnesota congresswoman and President Donald Trump just weeks before the November 3 midterm elections.

The Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a division of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, executed a court-authorized search warrant as part of an ongoing federal investigation. Authorities have not publicly detailed the full scope of the case.

A person familiar with the investigation said the inquiry concerns alleged immigration fraud, including questions surrounding paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. No findings establishing wrongdoing by the congresswoman were announced alongside the raid.

Omar, a Somali-born American citizen who became a naturalized citizen in 2000, denounced the operation as politically motivated. She accused the Trump administration of using federal institutions to target opponents and vowed to continue speaking out.

“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns,” she said in a social media post, describing the raid as another escalation in what she called a campaign of political intimidation.

Trump Renews Attacks as Election Day Approaches

The search unfolded against a backdrop of increasingly hostile exchanges between Trump and Omar, one of his most outspoken critics in Congress.

During a campaign appearance in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump attacked Somalia and disparaged the country from which Omar emigrated. Some supporters responded by chanting for her deportation.

Trump also urged voters to support Republicans, warning that Ohio could face problems similar to those he claims Minnesota is experiencing.

Omar represents a strongly Democratic district and is seeking another two-year term in the House of Representatives. Her campaign comes as Republicans fight to maintain control of Congress in the November elections.

The timing of the search has drawn particular attention because Justice Department policy cautions federal officials against taking investigative steps intended to influence an election or benefit a political candidate. The department has traditionally exercised restraint over publicly visible investigative actions close to Election Day.

Randall Eliason, a George Washington University law professor and former federal public corruption prosecutor, said the operation appeared to depart from that longstanding approach. He noted, however, that the policy lacks a formal enforcement mechanism.

A source familiar with the matter said the department consulted its Public Integrity Section and acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter before the search. The Public Integrity Section, which has historically played a role in cases involving elected officials, has been substantially reduced under the Trump administration.

Democrats Condemn the Operation

The raid prompted sharp criticism from Democratic leaders, who questioned whether federal investigative powers were being deployed against a political opponent.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, alongside Representatives Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, described the operation as deeply troubling. They argued that the presence of immigration enforcement agents at a sitting member of Congress’s home raised serious concerns about the use of government authority and promised to pursue accountability.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also condemned the action, accusing Trump of abusing presidential power to target political opponents shortly before voters head to the polls.

Republican lawmakers offered limited public reaction. Representative Nancy Mace said that if immigration fraud were proven, Omar should lose her citizenship and be removed from the country, adding that no one should be above the law.

The allegations remain under investigation, and the search itself does not establish that any immigration violation occurred.

Wider Pattern of Investigations Into Trump’s Critics

The operation adds to a series of federal investigations and prosecutions involving figures who have clashed with Trump or his administration.

Among those targeted during Trump’s second term have been former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and former national security adviser John Bolton. Federal authorities have also examined matters involving Democratic Senator Adam Schiff and Federal Reserve officials Jerome Powell and Lisa Cook.

Some of these cases have encountered significant legal setbacks. A federal judge dismissed the case against James and one of the two cases brought against Comey, while other investigations have faced resistance from grand juries and the courts. Bolton has pleaded guilty in a separate case and was awaiting sentencing at the time of the report.

These developments have intensified concerns among Trump’s opponents over the independence of federal investigative institutions and the potential for political considerations to shape enforcement decisions.

Omar’s Long-Running Feud With Trump

Omar has repeatedly been a target of Trump’s criticism, particularly during his recent attacks on Somali Americans and Muslim communities. The president has portrayed the Somali community in Minnesota as a source of problems, prompting condemnation from civil rights advocates.

Omar has described Trump’s sustained focus on her as an unhealthy obsession and has said that she and her family have received death threats linked to hostile political rhetoric.

The congresswoman has also faced physical attacks. In a separate incident, a Minnesota man who sprayed vinegar on her was sentenced to 14 months in prison after admitting to assaulting a federal official because he disagreed with her political views.

With the midterm elections approaching, the investigation into Omar now sits at the intersection of immigration enforcement, partisan conflict and longstanding questions over the independence of federal agencies. Its eventual findings will determine whether the allegations lead to further action, while the timing of the search has already triggered a fresh political confrontation in Washington.
