A former FBI special agent has been charged in Brooklyn with violating a pedestrian’s civil rights and making false statements after an alleged hit-and-run involving a government vehicle.
The indictment alleges that Andrew Reyes drove the wrong way along Ocean Parkway with emergency lights activated on 3 February, passed through a red light and struck a pedestrian. Prosecutors say Reyes moved the unconscious and severely injured person from the road to a bench, placed the person’s bag nearby, and then left without calling for medical assistance or reporting the collision.
A false-statements count rests on a later interview in which Reyes allegedly denied ever hitting someone with his FBI-issued car without reporting it. The civil-rights count alleges that, while acting under colour of law, he wilfully deprived the pedestrian of constitutional protection.
Reyes was arrested and the indictment was unsealed on 5 November in the Eastern District of New York. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless convicted. The court has not made findings on the incident; the maximum term identified by prosecutors is ten years. The official case page links to the indictment.
