Freshfields Hires Key DOJ Official as Washington Prepares for Surge of Congressional Investigations

In anticipation of a new wave of congressional probes under Republican control, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP has strategically bolstered its Washington office with the addition of Austin Evers, a seasoned Justice Department veteran. Evers, who most recently served as associate deputy attorney general, will co-lead the firm’s congressional investigations practice.

Evers brings a wealth of experience to the role, having navigated high-stakes legislative inquiries during his time with the Biden administration. In his new position, he will join forces with Andy Dockham, the former chief counsel to Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio. Together, they will guide Freshfields’ efforts to support clients facing scrutiny in the coming months.

With the shift in congressional power on the horizon, Evers warns that the era of the congressional subpoena has never been more consequential. “Congress is going to expand its reach beyond government entities,” Evers explained. “Expect a broader investigative scope, targeting businesses, individuals, and industry groups.”

His hiring marks the end of his tenure with the U.S. Justice Department, where he played a pivotal role in managing responses to external inquiries, particularly those involving controversial investigations. Evers’ previous government experience includes a tenure as executive director of American Oversight, a watchdog group, followed by roles at the U.S. Department of Defense before returning to the DOJ.

As Washington braces for increased investigations into a range of sectors, Freshfields is positioning itself as a go-to firm for those needing expert guidance in navigating complex governmental oversight.
