More than 65,000 consumers are receiving checks from the Federal Trade Commission following its case over fraudulent money transfers through Walmart.
The agency announced the distribution on October 15, saying payments total more than $9.8 million. Recipients should cash their checks within 90 days, as specified on each check.
The payments implement a June 2025 settlement, rather than a newly imposed penalty. The FTC had alleged that Walmart failed to maintain effective anti-fraud procedures, train staff adequately and warn customers about fraud risks associated with its transfer services.
The settlement requires steps to detect and prevent transfers induced by fraud. The new announcement concerns the return of money to affected consumers.
Questions about individual payments go to refund administrator Rust Consulting. The FTC says recipients do not have to pay money or supply account information to obtain a payment—a distinction that matters when a legitimate refund programme can itself become material for scammers.
