New Legal Firm Launches to Defend Those Targeted by Trump Administration’s Legal Actions

Abbe Lowell, a well-known Washington attorney, has stepped away from his role at Winston & Strawn to establish a new law firm, Lowell & Associates. The firm will focus on representing former government officials and others caught in what it describes as politically motivated investigations and actions.

Lowell, who previously defended Hunter Biden in criminal cases, is positioning his firm to handle high-profile cases involving individuals, institutions, and organizations targeted by what they argue are partisan probes.

The new firm has attracted a notable group of legal talent, including two former Skadden Arps lawyers who resigned after the firm entered into agreements with the Trump administration. Skadden, one of several law firms to sign deals to avoid retaliation by the administration, had faced scrutiny for allegedly compromising its values under political pressure. The ex-Skadden attorneys, including Rachel Cohen, expressed the need for legal professionals ready to challenge government overreach.

Joining the effort are two additional attorneys from Winston & Strawn, further strengthening the firm’s leadership.

In addition to his representation of Hunter Biden, Lowell’s other clients have included prominent figures such as former Senator Bob Menendez and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. His latest clients involve complex legal battles, including those challenging the Trump administration’s rollback of grant funding and other federal actions that are seen as politically charged.

Lowell & Associates emerges during a period of intense legal pushback against the Trump administration. Over 200 lawsuits are currently challenging its policies on various fronts, from LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights to the cancellation of federal funds and agency functions. Advocacy groups like Democracy Forward, which has led numerous legal challenges, continue to recruit top-tier legal talent, underscoring the mounting effort to resist the Trump-era legal landscape.

This new venture signals a broader strategy to defend those who face the fallout of an era of combative legal and political warfare.
