Rivian and Tesla Clash in Court Over Alleged Trade Secrets Heist

In a dramatic turn of events, electric vehicle maker Rivian is heading to trial, accused of luring former Tesla employees to abscond with trade secrets. A California judge, Theodore C. Zayner of Santa Clara County Superior Court, has ruled that Tesla provided enough evidence for the case to proceed.

Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, has accused Rivian of systematically poaching its staff and acquiring confidential information. The lawsuit, which began in 2020, claims that Rivian’s actions were not just aggressive recruiting but a targeted effort to siphon off valuable knowledge.

Despite Rivian’s attempt to dismiss the case by presenting its internal investigations, the judge found these measures lacking. “Tesla’s evidence establishes that some Rivian employees were less thoroughly investigated and not disciplined,” Zayner stated, indicating that the investigation did not adequately address the issue.

Rivian has consistently denied any wrongdoing but has chosen not to comment further at this stage. Tesla also has not responded to requests for comment. The final hearing in this high-stakes legal battle is set for Wednesday in Santa Clara.
