A federal jury in Brooklyn has convicted US citizen Halima Salman of receiving military-type training from ISIS while in Syria.
The verdict followed a two-week trial. Prosecutors presented evidence that Salman undertook weapons training in late 2016 and early 2017 in territory controlled by the organisation. The charged offence focuses on knowingly receiving military-type training from a designated foreign terrorist organisation.
The jury’s decision establishes guilt at trial but does not fix the sentence. The district court will address punishment in later proceedings under the governing statute and federal sentencing framework.
The case is distinct from a prosecution based solely on travel or association. The government was required to prove the charged training offence beyond a reasonable doubt, and the verdict reflects the evidence admitted in Salman’s case.
