Nepal Cricket Star Faces Eight-Year Sentence for Conviction in Rape Case

In a decisive verdict, a Nepalese court handed down an eight-year prison sentence to former cricket captain Sandeep Lamichhane for his involvement in a rape case. This legal culmination followed a protracted and often delayed trial that allowed Lamichhane to persist in his sporting endeavors.

Kathmandu district court official Ramu Sharma, the bearer of the court’s judgment, stated succinctly, “The court has sentenced him for eight years.”

The once-prominent cricketer’s fall from grace became apparent as the legal proceedings unfolded. Lamichhane, who had been released on bail after spending three months in custody for rape charges, found himself convicted on December 29, 2023, for assaulting a 17-year-old girl.

As the legal system weighed the evidence and deliberated on the case, the delay in justice cast a shadow over Lamichhane’s continued participation in sports. The verdict, however, now ensures that he will spend eight years behind bars, marking the end of an era for the disgraced cricket star.

The Kathmandu district court’s decision is a stark reminder that justice, though delayed, eventually catches up, even for those who once enjoyed the limelight of national acclaim.
