Qatar Urges Global Accountability for Crimes Against Women and Children in Conflict Zones

Amid the turmoil of war, women and children bear the most profound scars. In a powerful call to action, Qatar has urged nations to rigorously enforce laws that criminalize violations against these vulnerable groups, emphasizing the need for justice, accountability, and compensation for victims. Speaking at the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Qatar’s Permanent Representative, Dr. Hend Abdulrahman Al Muftah, highlighted the urgent need for nations to fulfill their obligations under international law, ensuring protection for women and children during and after conflict.

Joined by 134 countries in a joint declaration, Qatar’s appeal stressed that violations against women and children can rise to the level of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Al Muftah demanded that all parties in armed conflicts adhere to international humanitarian and human rights laws, and protect civilians, especially women and children, from the horrors of war.

The declaration underscored the critical importance of ensuring safe humanitarian access and safeguarding vital infrastructure like schools and hospitals. Al Muftah also highlighted the essential role of women in peace-building efforts, calling for their meaningful participation in conflict resolution, mediation, and peacekeeping processes.

The call for prioritizing the rights of women and children echoed throughout the session, urging UN bodies to ensure these issues are at the forefront of their mandates. As conflicts continue to ravage communities worldwide, Qatar’s message serves as a stark reminder that the human toll on women and children cannot be ignored.
