The Middle East and North Africa could see electricity consumption surge to more than twice its current level by 2050, as artificial intelligence, data centres, hydrogen projects and expanding industries place unprecedented pressure on power systems.
Electricity demand across the MENA region is projected to climb from 1,671 terawatt-hours in 2025 to 3,670 terawatt-hours by 2050, according to forecasts cited by Mark Ring, Group Director of Middle East Energy.
The accelerating adoption of AI and the rapid expansion of data centres are creating a new challenge for energy providers: how to supply vast amounts of electricity while keeping grids reliable, flexible and increasingly sustainable.
That shift was a major theme at the 50th edition of Middle East Energy, where industry discussions focused heavily on flexible power generation, battery storage, critical power systems and intelligent energy management.
The UAE remains at the centre of this transformation, with its continued emphasis on innovation, sustainability and energy security helping strengthen its influence in the global energy landscape.
Over three days, the exhibition brought together more than 30,000 energy professionals, providing a meeting ground for industry executives, investors, policymakers and decision-makers. The event has increasingly evolved from a traditional trade exhibition into a platform where partnerships and ideas are translated into major energy projects.
Middle East Energy is also preparing for its next chapter, with the event scheduled to relocate to the Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City Dubai in 2027.
This year’s exhibition reflected the changing priorities of the energy industry. Renewable power, energy efficiency, electricity storage, transmission infrastructure and reliable backup systems featured prominently as governments and companies prepare for rising consumption.
Equipment such as transformers, switchgear and transmission technologies drew significant attention, underlining the growing need to strengthen power networks alongside the expansion of generation capacity.
Long-term planning is also becoming increasingly important. PVFarm received an Innovation Award for its pre-construction intelligence software designed for solar and energy storage projects, highlighting the industry’s growing reliance on advanced planning tools before major investments are made.
AI and data centres, however, are rapidly emerging as some of the most significant new consumers of electricity. Middle East Energy responded to this changing landscape with its Powering AI initiative, placing greater emphasis on technologies capable of supporting high-demand digital infrastructure.
The broader regional energy transition is now moving beyond ambitious targets and into large-scale execution. Discussions at the event included collaboration among dozens of global companies aimed at accelerating practical implementation.
Energy storage, grid modernisation and digitalisation are expected to remain at the heart of this transformation. Large-scale solar projects combined with battery storage are increasingly seen as crucial to expanding renewable generation while ensuring that electricity networks remain stable.
As AI reshapes economies and data infrastructure expands across the region, the race is no longer simply about producing more electricity. The bigger challenge will be building smarter, more flexible and resilient power systems capable of meeting a dramatically different energy future.
