Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Secures Bail in Corruption Case

In a significant development, Delhi Chief Minister and prominent opposition figure, Arvind Kejriwal, has been granted bail by a city court in connection with a high-profile graft case. This comes in the wake of national elections where opposition parties, including Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), outperformed expectations.

Arrested in March by India’s financial-crime fighting agency, Kejriwal faced allegations of corruption tied to the capital’s liquor policy—a charge he has vehemently denied. In a crucial move, India’s top court had granted him temporary bail in May, allowing him to actively campaign during the election period for both AAP and the broader INDIA alliance, a coalition of over twenty opposition groups.

Upon the expiration of his temporary bail, Kejriwal voluntarily returned to custody on June 2. His legal team, led by Rishikesh Kumar, confirmed that the formalities for his release on bail would be finalized by the following afternoon.

The AAP and its allies have consistently dismissed the graft allegations as politically motivated, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration of attempting to undermine opposition efforts during the elections. The government, however, has rejected these claims.

In response to the court’s decision, AAP took to social media platform X, asserting, “Truth can be troubled, not defeated.”

Despite losing its outright majority in the recent elections, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party managed to form a government through alliances with other parties.
