Dubai’s Watchful Eye: Customs Seizes 10.8 Million Fake Goods in 2024

Dubai Customs cracked down on counterfeit trade in 2024, intercepting 10.8 million fake items across 54 seizures. This relentless effort safeguards intellectual property and reinforces Dubai’s position as a global trade hub by shielding legitimate businesses from financial losses caused by brand counterfeiting.

To stay ahead of smuggling tactics, customs officers undergo specialized training in detecting fraudulent goods, backed by cutting-edge inspection technologies and smart IT applications. These innovations enhance efficiency, making Dubai a leader in modern customs practices.

Dr. Abdulla Busenad, Director-General of Dubai Customs, emphasized the department’s role in supporting Dubai’s booming trade sector, aligning with the emirate’s ambitious D33 Economic Agenda. The city’s strategic global connections fueled remarkable trade growth, with sea freight surging 23%, land freight climbing 21%, and air freight increasing 11.3% compared to 2023.

Dubai Customs not only fights counterfeiting but also strengthens international trade links through digital customs services, earning recognition as a benchmark in customs modernization. In 2024, the department recorded a 49.2% spike in customs data processing, reflecting its expanding role in global commerce.

Beyond intellectual property protection, customs enforcement led to a staggering 3,273 seizures last year, curbing illegal trade activities that threaten both the economy and society. Progress on key initiatives saw 55 out of 84 strategic projects completed, driving a 5% rise in handled cargo, an 8% boost in passenger luggage processing, and a 9% increase in travelers.

With its vigilant enforcement and cutting-edge operations, Dubai Customs continues to be a formidable force in securing trade flows and protecting the integrity of the emirate’s economic landscape.
