Exploring the Courthouses of NYC: Where Law, Beauty, and Scandals Collide
December 16, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
You’ve watched “Law & Order,” but how much do you really know about NYC’s legal system? It’s time to walk the streets with one of New York’s most prominent courthouse experts to get the truth about New York’s civic history, and nothing but the truth.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the civic sites and institutions that shaped law and public policy in New York City, and the nation, throughout the past 400 years.
Led by Robert Pigott, lawyer and author of New York’s Legal Landmarks, our unique experience will include:
- A discussion around New York’s civic history and how it grew from a couple of buildings in a stagnant pond to the complex web of “due administration of justice” it is today
- A visit to current and former courthouse locations to highlight their architecture, history, and mentions in literature and film
- A discussion around the local and state jail systems, and the infamous jail of yesteryears known as “The Tombs”
- Landmark trials throughout the centuries that took place in the former and still-standing courthouses along the route
See you there!
*Please bring water and a pair of comfortable shoes as we’ll be on our feet for the duration of the tour
**This experience will begin at 85 Broad Street and finish at 100 Centre Street
