Exploring Progress: Abu Dhabi Judicial Department Undersecretary Surveys Evolution in Penal and Correctional Systems

ABU DHABI – In a groundbreaking move, Counselor Yousef Saeed Al Abri, the Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD), embarked on an investigative field tour of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s penal and correctional institutions.

The primary objective behind Al Abri’s visit was to scrutinize the intricate workflow and procedural dynamics, while closely monitoring the caliber of care, rehabilitation, and reformation extended to inmates. The overarching aim remains the seamless reintegration of these individuals into society post the implementation of judicially mandated sentence periods.

In the wake of the transfer of management responsibilities to the Judicial Department on January 1, 2024, under a law issued by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this marks the Undersecretary’s maiden voyage to a punitive and correctional facility.

Al Abri convened a comprehensive meeting with directors of prison and correctional institutions. The agenda delved into work methodologies, strategic orientations, and plans geared towards enhancing performance and elevating the overall service system. These initiatives align closely with the Judicial Department’s strategic plan priorities.

During the session, Al Abri underscored the imperative need for synchronized efforts in executing developmental processes and adopting best practices. This resonates with the commitment and support extended by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, and the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of ADJD. Their vision is to ensure seamless business continuity, sustainability, and a forward-looking approach.

In his survey of the vital facilities, and professional and technical workshops within the prison and correctional edifices, the Undersecretary also delved into the prerequisites for implementing an advanced suite of rehabilitation programs. These programs adhere rigorously to the highest international practices and standards, aiming to benefit inmates by preparing them as contributing members of society.

Engaging directly with inmates, Al Abri sought their insights on care and rehabilitation services, as well as their perspectives on training, educational workshops, sports events, activities, and awareness programs. He acknowledged the pivotal role these initiatives play in imparting practical skills, mastery of craft professions, and ultimately facilitating a smooth reintegration into society post-serving sentences—enabling a transition to respectable lives beyond incarceration.
