Exxon Battles Back: Lawsuit Targets California AG and Environmental Groups Over Recycling Claims

In a bold counterstrike, Exxon Mobil has filed a federal lawsuit accusing California Attorney General Rob Bonta and environmental organizations of defamation and targeted attacks on the company’s advanced plastics recycling initiatives.

The suit, lodged in Beaumont, Texas, alleges that Bonta collaborated with a law firm and environmental advocates to orchestrate a campaign undermining Exxon’s recycling technology, which the company touts as a groundbreaking solution for tackling hard-to-recycle plastics. Exxon claims these actions are motivated by political and competitive interests, particularly highlighting connections to Fortescue, a rival in low-carbon innovation.

Exxon is seeking damages and a retraction, contending that its recycling efforts have been unfairly labeled a “sham” and “myth.” In response, the California Department of Justice characterized the lawsuit as a diversionary tactic, reaffirming its commitment to holding Exxon accountable for its role in contributing to plastic pollution.

This legal maneuver marks a continuation of Exxon’s combative stance against critics, following previous lawsuits against activist investors over climate-related shareholder proposals. While Exxon maintains its recycling technology is a critical step in addressing waste, opponents argue the initiative masks the company’s environmental impact.

Amid these clashes, Exxon has announced a $200 million investment to expand its recycling capabilities in Texas, underscoring its determination to advance the technology despite mounting challenges.
