Federal Probe into Alleged Sabotage of Musk’s Government Downsizing Effort, Prosecutor Says

The federal investigation into resistance against Elon Musk’s plan to overhaul the U.S. government is intensifying, with a prosecutor suggesting that actions taken by some government officials may have violated the law. The probe is focused on the targeting of individuals involved in Musk’s controversial effort to reduce the size of the federal workforce and trim government spending.

Edward Martin, the acting U.S. attorney in Washington, confirmed on Monday that the FBI is looking into the interference that Musk’s team faced while trying to implement the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). These actions have allegedly involved government workers blocking access to sensitive classified data and obstructing efforts to streamline operations.

The DOGE initiative, which Musk champions as a bold move to eliminate inefficiency, is also facing criticism from those who view it as a thinly veiled attack on government programs aligned with the Trump administration’s “America First” approach. Musk’s push has already resulted in sweeping layoffs and buyouts offered to federal employees.

According to Martin, evidence gathered suggests that certain individuals or groups might have broken the law in their attempts to disrupt the DOGE initiative. His statement marks the first hint that the ongoing resistance could lead to legal consequences, likely discouraging further defiance from public servants concerned about overreach.

While specifics about who may have broken the law or what charges could arise remain unclear, the investigation has already raised questions. Unusually, Martin shared his actions publicly, revealing that he had written a letter to Musk asking for information on anyone who might have tried to obstruct his team’s efforts.

Resistance within federal agencies has already been evident. Top security officials at the U.S. Agency for International Development were removed after they attempted to block DOGE representatives from accessing secure areas. Likewise, a Treasury Department official reportedly refused to cooperate with DOGE’s requests to access the agency’s payment systems.

As the FBI accelerates its investigation, the full scale of opposition to Musk’s government overhaul remains unclear, with consequences potentially looming for those involved in stymieing the process.
