Madrid, June 17, 2024 – Luis Rubiales, the former head of the Spanish Football Federation, is set to stand trial from February 3-19, 2025. This follows a court ruling on Monday, highlighting allegations surrounding his controversial kiss on the lips of Women’s World Cup champion Jenni Hermoso.
Rubiales, who recently returned to Spain from the Dominican Republic, was apprehended by the Guardia Civil on April 3, 2024, reportedly in connection with investigations into irregular contracts during his tenure. The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing legal scrutiny faced by Rubiales.
The court’s decision in May determined that Rubiales would face trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion, stemming from the incident during the medal ceremony following Spain’s victory over England in the World Cup held in Australia last year.
This trial is expected to further scrutinize Rubiales’ actions during his leadership of the RFEF, shedding light on broader issues within Spanish football governance.
