Federal judges across the United States are facing an unprecedented wave of threats, a surge fueled by tech mogul Elon Musk’s relentless attacks on the judiciary. As Musk and allies of President Donald Trump escalate their criticism of court rulings that challenge their efforts to shrink the federal government, concerns over judicial security have reached new heights.
The U.S. Marshals Service has warned judges about heightened threat levels, citing an uptick in violent rhetoric online. Musk, through his social media platform X, has labeled judges as “corrupt,” “radical,” and part of the “TYRANNY of the JUDICIARY.” In more than 30 posts since late January, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has openly called for the impeachment of judges who have blocked the administration’s plans, echoing Republican lawmakers’ demands.
In interviews, 11 federal judges revealed growing unease over their personal safety, with some reporting direct threats. Security measures have been reinforced for certain judges, including those in New York whose rulings have stalled Musk-led government restructuring efforts. In Washington, D.C., anonymous intimidation tactics—such as sending pizzas to judges’ homes—are being investigated as veiled warnings.
The rhetoric is having dangerous real-world consequences. Judge Amir Ali, who ruled against a Trump administration decision to halt foreign aid, became a target of threats, including calls for his execution. Social media posts have incited harassment, with some users demanding Ali’s arrest or deportation, while others made racist remarks about his background.
The surge in hostility is alarming veteran legal figures. Former judge John Jones III, who has spoken to numerous judges concerned for their safety, warns that unchecked attacks on the judiciary could have deadly consequences. Meanwhile, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has condemned the rise in threats, cautioning against political attempts to undermine judicial independence.
While judicial security officials work to counter growing risks, legal experts warn that Musk’s inflammatory rhetoric—and the broader effort to discredit judges—threatens the stability of America’s legal system. With more than 100 lawsuits challenging the administration’s sweeping federal cuts, judges remain at the center of a political storm, facing pressures unlike anything seen before.
