In a resolute stance, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak remains steadfast in his conviction that his proposed asylum plan, involving the relocation of asylum seekers to Rwanda, does not violate international law. This comes in response to the president of a human rights court asserting that the UK government has a binding duty to adhere to its directives.
Sunak advocates for granting ministers the authority to determine compliance with injunctions issued by the European Court of Human Rights. The president of the court issued a cautionary statement on Thursday, contending that such a course of action would transgress international legal boundaries.
The genesis of this dispute traces back to June 2022, when the court, employing interim measures under Rule 39, issued a last-minute injunction to forestall the initial round of deportations.
Asserting confidence in the legislation, Sunak’s spokesperson affirmed, “We remain assured that our legislative measures align with our international commitments.”
