According to insights from the National Conference of Bar Examiners, the national average score on the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) – the crucial 200 multiple-choice question segment of the examination – has seen a modest uptick of 0.7 points, now resting at a respectable 131.8. This modest increase arrives on the heels of a disheartening two-year decline in the average MBE score, plummeting by 2.9 points between 2021 and 2023.
While many states are still in the process of evaluating the February exams – encompassing sections beyond the MBE component – indications suggest a potential surge in pass rates overall. Only West Virginia has stepped forward with its February results, revealing a slight drop in its overall pass rate from 55% in 2023 to 45%, albeit based on a modest sample size of just 49 test takers.
The nationwide tally of February examinees hit a five-year high at 19,496, marking a significant rebound from the subdued figures witnessed in both 2021 and 2022, where test takers nationwide dwindled below the 17,000 mark.
