Saudi Arabia Rounds Up Over 20,000 Illegal Residents in Week-Long Operation

In a significant enforcement action, Saudi Arabia has detained 20,718 individuals living illegally in the country. The operation, conducted from August 22 to August 28, involved extensive joint efforts by security forces and various government agencies.

Among those arrested, 13,248 were found in violation of residency laws, 4,688 breached border security regulations, and 2,782 were in contravention of labor laws. Additionally, 744 individuals attempting to illegally enter Saudi Arabia were apprehended; the majority were Ethiopian nationals (62%), followed by Yemenis (37%), with the remainder from other countries. Another 69 people were caught trying to exit the Kingdom unlawfully.

The crackdown also targeted those facilitating illegal residency. Sixteen people involved in transporting, sheltering, or employing illegal residents were arrested. Of the 14,634 expatriates currently in the legal process, 13,532 are men and 1,102 are women.

The Ministry of Interior has taken decisive steps to manage the situation: 5,361 violators are being referred to their embassies for travel documents, 1,982 are completing travel arrangements, and 12,410 have been deported. The ministry has issued a stern warning against anyone aiding illegal entry or residency, with severe penalties including up to 15 years in prison, fines up to SR1 million, and confiscation of vehicles and property used in the offenses.

For reporting violations, residents are encouraged to contact 911 in Makkah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, or 999 and 996 in other regions.
