Supreme Court Backs State’s Limit on Children for Govt Jobs

In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court has thrown its weight behind the Rajasthan Government’s stance on restricting candidates with more than two children from applying for certain government positions. The contentious issue revolved around Rule 24(4) of the Rajasthan Police Subordinate Service Rules, 1989, which bars individuals with more than two offspring from eligibility for roles such as police constables.

The Court, in its decision, highlighted the constitutional validity of this rule, asserting that it does not contravene any fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. This validation serves as a reaffirmation of the state’s prerogative to enact policies aimed at population control and maintaining a manageable workforce.

While the ruling may spark debate among various quarters, it underscores the judiciary’s deference to the legislative intent in matters concerning public policy and administrative guidelines. This verdict sets a precedent for similar measures across different states, signaling a proactive approach towards addressing demographic challenges and ensuring the efficiency of public services.

In essence, the Supreme Court’s stance reflects a balance between individual rights and the state’s responsibility to regulate its workforce, emphasizing the overarching goal of fostering sustainable development and societal welfare.
