In a bid to curb the rising trend of risky driving antics, Dubai Police recently impounded an SUV and a quad bike involved in performing stunts at the serene family camping zone in Al Ruwayyah. This follows the seizure of five vehicles the previous week, all engaged in daring maneuvers, prompting authorities to take decisive action.
To retrieve their confiscated vehicles, culprits will be required to pay a hefty impoundment fee, with the penalty soaring to a staggering Dh50,000. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, the director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, emphasized the severity of the issue, stating that such reckless behavior not only disrupts the peace but also poses a significant threat to the safety of fellow road users.
Delving into the motivations behind this dangerous driving culture, some young motorists confessed to seeking “cheap thrills, adrenaline rush, and social media attention.” A driver in his early 20s admitted finding exhilaration in speeding, likening the experience to scenes from his favorite high-speed movie sequences.
In response to the escalating menace, Dubai Police implemented stricter fines for traffic violations last year. Offenses such as reckless driving and running red lights now incur a substantial penalty of Dh50,000 to reclaim impounded vehicles. Moreover, a more severe fine of Dh100,000 awaits those involved in illegal road races.
Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, the assistant commander-in-chief for operations at Dubai Police, emphasized the significance of recent amendments to the traffic laws. These changes aim to bolster road safety initiatives, safeguard lives, and protect property. Major General Al Ghaithi asserted that the legal adjustments specifically target and deter reckless drivers from endangering the community.
A road safety expert highlighted the responsibility of friends and peers, urging them not to endorse hazardous driving. Instead, they should promote a culture of safety and discourage risky behavior, emphasizing the need for genuine care and consideration on the roads. As Dubai Police intensifies its crackdown, the message is clear: thrill-seekers will face substantial consequences for their actions.
