Trump Seeks $6 Million Payback After Georgia Election Case Unravels

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has moved a Georgia state court to recover more than $6.2 million, saying the sum reflects what he spent defending himself in a now-defunct case tied to the 2020 election.

The request follows the collapse of the high-profile proceedings in Fulton County, which were formally withdrawn late last year. Trump’s filing argues that a Georgia statute enacted in 2025 entitles him to reimbursement when charges are dismissed after the official leading the case is removed for misconduct.

In a statement accompanying the court filing, Trump’s side described the case as politically driven and said the law leaves little room for discretion once the underlying conditions are met.

The Georgia legislation, passed in May, mandates compensation for defendants when a case ends after the disqualification of the official who initiated it. That provision became central after an appeals court removed the Fulton County district attorney in 2024, citing an “appearance of impropriety” linked to a personal relationship with a key figure appointed to run the matter.

The original case accused Trump and 18 others of orchestrating a broad effort to reverse Georgia’s 2020 election outcome, an allegation that gained momentum after a recording surfaced of Trump urging a senior election official to “find” enough votes to change the result. All of those named had denied wrongdoing.

Trump is not alone in seeking reimbursement. At least two other individuals previously named in the same case have also filed claims for their defence costs, though the court has yet to rule on any of the requests.

The Fulton County office has not issued a public response to Trump’s latest filing.
